# 5 Design Trends for 2022

A new year can mean time for a change. If you’re looking to change up some of your furniture pieces, or maybe even looking forward to a complete room makeover, check out these top five design trends before beginning.

**All-Natural**
From colors to materials, you’ll be seeing a lot more natural and sustainable pieces being used in home design. Not only in looks, but also in manufacturing processes. Individuals are more aware and conscious of production impacts to the environment and want to have pieces that will not only last, but are produced with the earth in mind.
Natural design also leads to a more relaxing space. As we’ve spent a lot of time in our homes, people want to create a more serene and balanced space using natural materials and a color palette based on colors you’d find in nature, such as browns, taupes, beiges, blues, greens, and grays.
To complete a natural look, accent with greenery from houseplants and use woven baskets for storage.

**Curves**
While traditional straight back sofas and furniture will never go out of style, this year you’re likely to see more feminine-styled pieces with curvature and softer edges.
Think loveseats, chairs, and sofas that add an inviting a soft touch to any room. It also adds intrigue to any rooms, creating a fun accent or conversation piece.

If you’re still challenged on space, consider a round ottoman, coffee table or accent tables to get the same effect on a smaller scale.
**Making it Multifunctional**
As we’ve had to create work-from-home scenarios, the multifunctional furniture trend is here to stay, especially if you’re living in a small space where you need to optimize every square foot.
And when it comes to picking multifunctional pieces, it all comes down to purpose. Many pieces can serve many functions, but now designers are really looking at the needs of the end-users to ensure the pieces truly are multifunctional.
From overall room design to serve a variety of needs, such as an office and living room, to pieces that can serve a small family and also large gatherings, identifying the needs will help you select the best furniture for your needs now (and later).
Many of the multifunctional pieces can also be used as statement pieces. Sideboards are a great piece that can serve as storage for kids items, work items, kitchen or dining items, and much more while enhancing the design of your room. [Ottomans](https://www.watsons.com/furniture/living-room/ottomans) are really great multifunctional pieces lending extra seating when needed, a footrest, or even as a small table.
**Tons of Texture**
No more one-dimensional rooms. Textures are on trend for 2022 and can add warmth and variety to any room and color scheme. From using differing fabrics like velvets and performance fabrics to accents like woven baskets and stone vases, you’ll see a lot more layering and texture this year.

Consider the following items to select from and place them together in complementary ways, such as a velvet chair against a brick wall.
- Use different materials (wood, stone, concrete, brick, rattan, wallpaper, paint, etc.)
- Use different fabrics (velvet, leather, performance fabric, custom fabric, linen, etc.)
- Use different decor elements (greenery, artwork, pillows, vases, mirrors, shelving, etc.)
- Use different pieces of furniture (ottomans, benches, [accent tables](https://www.watsons.com/furniture/living-room/accent-tables?product_list_limit=all), coffee tables, sideboard, etc.)
- Consider window treatments and [area rugs](https://www.watsons.com/furniture/living-room/indoor-rugs) to add more layers to a room without adding more furniture to it
**Finishing Touches**
We don’t want to overlook the little details that can also make a big impact in a room - the finishes on furniture and hardware. This year we’ll see more matte and brushed hardware and finishes. From the kitchen faucet to knobs on dressers and door handles, matte is here and shine is out.
