Picking the Best Colors for Your Home

As fall arrives and we start to move our activities and attention to our indoor spaces, it’s a good time to reevaluate or update your interior home colors. Especially if you’re considering updating your indoor furniture.

Paint and adding color through accent pieces are simple ways to completely change the look and feel of a room, even with the same furniture.

But with so many options and shades to choose from, how do you go about adding color in a way that fits you, your home, and your style?

Checkout our guide below to help you update with some color in your home this fall!

Begin with What You Love

This may seem obvious, but instead of following trends, begin with the colors you love. Go to the paint store or sift through magazines to find colors you’re attracted to and that make you happy.

You’re the one enjoying these spaces so it’s important you love it! Whether you use your favorite color as a base color on your walls or prefer to use it in your decor and accents, make sure you incorporate it somehow.

Find Complementary Colors

Once you have your favorites picked out, look at color wheels or find colors that complement them. These again can either be used as base colors or accent colors but will help you begin to create a palette for the room you’re updating.

Having a palette will also make it easier when adding items to your room, whether it be furniture, artwork, or accent pieces. Once you know your palette, you can quickly figure out if something will work or not.

Sample New Colors

As you find paint colors you want to update with, make sure you sample them first. This is beneficial for a few reasons. First, the color will change based on the time of day and lighting in your room. Do you love it in the morning and at night, or does natural light verse overhead lights give a different effect?

The other reason is to make sure the undertones for your paint complement the room, furniture, and accents. All colors have undertones - some more obvious than others. Depending on other items in your room, certain undertones may be more pronounced and either add or detract from the look you’re going for.

Sampling will also give you an idea of how well the color works with your flooring and trim colors.

Decide Where You Want Specific Color

You can add color anywhere, so deciding what color goes where is important. Are you painting your walls? Maybe just an accent wall? Or would you rather keep walls neutral and add pops of color with your furniture or accent pieces?

Consider the following items in your room that you can add color with:

  • Walls
  • Furniture fabrics
  • Shades or curtains
  • Artwork
  • Tables
  • Pillows
  • Blankets
  • Decor
  • Rugs
  • Ottomans
  • Furniture materials (wood, metal, mixed media, etc.)
  • Light fixtures

Once you know the items you want to add or update color to, you can assign what will change and what will stay the same within your room.

Consider Your Style

In addition to your favorite colors, consider the style you most prefer. Do you like coastal or modern? Farmhouse or contemporary? Traditional or transitional? Many of these styles have specific palettes you can follow, for instance a more natural style may use creams, beiges, and greens - colors you’d find in outdoor environments.

Consider the color of the furniture you want as well so that nothing gets lost or sticks out too much (unless that’s the look you’re going for). The idea with color is to make everything look cohesive, whether that’s a neutral or bold palette.

Additional Considerations with Color

As you prepare to update your interior color, whether in one room, a few, or the whole house, consider these color tips:

  1. Neutral with Pops: If you’re someone who likes to change colors up a lot, consider keeping your walls a singular color throughout your home and adding color to each room in accents. Not only will the singular color make your home look larger and ease the transition from room to room, the pops of color in each room can easily be changed and updated without having to repaint walls.
  2. Lighten or Darken Shades: If you love a color, but the sample isn’t working, consider asking to lighten or darken it at the store. This may be just what you need to find the right shade.
  3. Keep it one tone: Try to avoid mixing tones and just stick to one - either cool or warm tones. Mixing tones can make the room clash.
  4. Not Sure? If you’re not sure on some of your colors, begin to use them sparingly. Add them in through artwork, pillows, blankets, or even an area rug to see how you like them.
  5. Consider the 60-30-10 Rule: For the perfect balance of pop, consider Mark McCauley’s design rule of 60-30-10. Dominant color (walls) should be 60% of the room, followed by a secondary color (upholstery) for 30%, and accents should make up 10%.
