# 5 Steps to Choose the Best Bar Stool Design for Your Home

Add bar stools for easy seating at the kitchen island or home bar. Pull out extra bar stools when you have guests over for a game night or party. Set one in the corner as a plant stand.

With hundreds of designs available in short, tall, and every height or size in between, here’s how to choose the right design for your home:
## 1. Decide where the bar stools will go.
This will be key to deciding the number of stools you need, the height and the design style.
## 2. Measure for height.
If you are using the bar stools with a counter or table, measure from the surface down to the floor.
If your tabletop is 36 to 39” high, pair with a counter stool.
If your tabletop is 40 to 42” high, pair with a bar stool.
## 3. Choose your design style.
Bar stools are available in just about any design style — including contemporary, rustic, modern, transitional or industrial.
Choose bar stools that complement the look of your existing space, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to match.
In fact, if you already have a space with many wood elements, choosing a bar stool with metal legs could be a nice accent piece.
## 4. Choose your seat color.
Your bar stool does not need to match other chairs nearby. So this is where you can really show off your personal style.
Some people opt to stick with the same color theme for a unified look, choosing seat colors that are in the same color family as their cabinets or wall color.
Others prefer a pop of color and will go for a contrasting color.
If you choose to go with a different color, we do recommend you keep at least some common theme, though, like the material or design style.
## 5. Consider the features you want in your design.
Bar stools come in all kinds of shapes and styles. You have the choice of features such as:
- Swivel stools
- Adjustable height
- Back or backless
- Arms or armless
