Winter can be brutal on our skin.

From the dry and cold outdoors to the dry and hot indoors, the effects of the season can occur quickly.

So as we face the height of the winter season (and if you’re using a hot tub or spa), we wanted to share some helpful tips to keep your skin looking and feeling great.

Stay Hydrated

Seems pretty obvious, but oftentimes during the dry winter months we don’t get the urge to drink water as often. Begin from within and make sure you’re drinking an adequate amount of water each day to stay hydrated. Aim for 8 oz. of water eight times a day (or half a gallon).

Keep it Timely

Whether it’s a dip in your hot tub, a hot bath, or a shower, keep your suds and soaks to a minimum so that you don’t wear away your body’s natural moisture barrier. Keep your time in the water to 15 minutes or less.

If you take a soak in your hot tub or spa, make sure to rinse off quickly in the shower as well to remove any residue from chlorine and other chemicals that may contribute to dry skin in the winter.

Exfoliate

Those dead skin cells aren’t helping your dry skin. In fact, they are making it worse, blocking you from absorbing the moisture you need. Make sure you’re exfoliating and removing those dead skin cells during soaks and showers. Use a gentle exfoliant with more natural ingredients to avoid anymore chemicals that can irritant or dry out your skin.

Quick Tip: When drying offer after a shower or soak, don’t rub, but rather pat yourself dry to avoid irritating dry skin more.

Moisturize Often

The best time to moisturize is right after your hot tub soak or shower after you pat dry. Damp skin absorbs better. Switching to an oil-based moisturizer during the winter months will also help, especially in your face, which is more prone to the elements.

For feet and hands, consider a putting on a thick moisturizer before bed and covering with socks or cotton gloves to help lock in the moisture.

Quick Tip: Don’t forget your lips! Use a scrub to exfoliate your lips and a good balm to moisturize!

Add Humidity

The outdoor cold air isn’t the only irritant during the winter. Our indoor dry, hot air also can cause flare-ups and dry skin. Consider adding humidifiers to your bedrooms and run them at night to add more moisture in the air.

Water Quality

If using your hot tub or spa to relax, make sure the quality of your water is top notch to avoid irritating your skin with extra chemicals. Our FROG @ease SmartChlor system for Bullfrog spas uses 75% less chlorine to assure the best levels for cleanliness without mixing chemicals and overdoing it.

Also consider adding some water therapies to your hot tub to ease stress and relax even more during your quick soak.
