Decking Options for Your Above Ground Pool

Posted by Watson's on Jul 15, 2022 12:00:00 PM

One of the reasons we (and our customers) love above ground pools so much is that they are versatile. Not only can you pick the perfect place in your yard to place the pool, but the options to deck it out can seem almost limitless.

While you don’t have to add a deck to your above ground pool, many people opt to add a deck or half a deck for a combination of reasons:

  1. To match their existing outdoor décor and landscaping
  2. To make it easier to get in and out of the pool (think stairs instead of ladders)
  3. To add additional seating/sunbathing/recreational space to the pool area
  4. To hide the pool equipment
  5. To add safety measures

Whether you already have an above ground pool and are looking to add a deck this summer or are pricing out adding both to your outdoor space, keep reading for more information and options when it comes to pool decks!

Types of Decks

Just like the versatility of Watson’s above ground pools, there’s also versatility in the types of decking you can add.

There are four basic types of decks:

Full-Surround: These self-explanatory decks surround the full pool perimeter allowing for additional space around your whole pool for furniture, grills, a hot tub, or more depending on size. The full-surround deck creates a flush appearance and seamless transition from deck to pool for easy access in and out.

Side Decks: Unlike the full-surround, these decks are built along one to two sides of the pool. They still create a seamless transition where the decking meets the pool, but they don’t surround the full pool. These are great options for those on a budget or if placing in a space where you maybe only want or have access to add in a specific area.

Combination Decks: These decks are where owners can really use their imagination with their space and the pool. These can be any combination of different levels, such as a multi-terraced deck or maybe a side deck on one side and patio on the other.

Pool Tip: When designing your above ground pool deck, don’t put your pool equipment under the deck. Rather, select a space near the pool and build a separate structure for the pool equipment for easier access for maintenance. Some equipment may need airflow, so talk with an expert at Watson’s before building. Plus, you can use any excess materials from your decking to build this structure!

Decking Materials

Just as there are options for the style of deck you want, there’s also different materials to consider. Maintenance, the overall look, and cost are all factors in the type of material you select.

Real Wood: A common choice, real wood is durable, is naturally anti-slip, and can be stained to match your aesthetic. Real wood can also be measured and cut easily to fit your design needs. The only challenge with real wood is potential for warping and splintering if not properly cared for. If you want a real wood deck, opt for pressure-treated wood, and add a stain or at least a sealant to protect against water and sun damage.

Composite: This is made of both wood fibers and plastic. Because of the addition of the plastic, you can say goodbye to splinters and warping. It’s durable and can last longer than wood with less maintenance.

PVC: Also known as plastic decking, this is a slightly different take on a combination. Made entirely of plastic but manufactured to look like wood, PVC offers the best of both worlds in regard to maintenance and looks. This low-maintenance option is stain-resistant and won’t warp or splinter.

Aluminum: Stronger yet lighter than all the other decking options, aluminum decking is becoming more popular because of its low maintenance and low cost. It’s durable, resistant to mold and cracks, and won’t rust.

The type of decking materials you select will be based on your budget, preference in look and color, and how much maintenance you want. There’s no right or wrong for your pool deck, but there are a lot of options. Watson’s experts are always available to answer any questions and share popular choices!

Fencing

Fencing is a common addition to a pool deck for décor, but most importantly, for safety. While the fence does not need to encompass the full deck, many people opt to include around the pool with a locked gate, especially if you have young kids.

Watson’s carries fencing that specifically attaches to the sides of the pool for added security. But you can also add within your deck design as well. Just make sure to plan where you want it and also check your city codes to know what height it needs to be!

Landscaping

Whether you choose to build a full-surround or side deck, there’s still so much you can add to your space, like landscaping.

If you decide to go with a side deck, another option to consider is wrapping the exposed pool side in a stone. Then you can transition the stone into a patio space. You can also wrap in the same material as your deck to create a more cohesive look even though you’re not decking your full pool diameter. This could be a great option if you have limited space on a side or two of your pool but want to create the same look and effect of the deck.

For landscaping around your pool, consider your walking path to the deck or around the pool and choose pavers, stone, or tiles that have traction to prevent slipping when wet.

If you don’t want to add décor to the exposed sides, consider adding gravel or small rock and plants to add some pops of color. Ornamental grasses are a great landscaping option as they don’t need much water and are low maintenance. Don’t add mulch as that can attract termites, which may decide to eat the pool!

Pool Tip: You don’t have to only decorate with plants! Lanterns with flameless candles or even pathway lights around your pool are a great way to add light and create a safer environment if you’re swimming at dusk or night. It also makes for a beautiful night swim atmosphere.

Other Considerations for Pool Decking

When you’re ready to start designing or building your above ground pool deck, make sure to take the following items into consideration:

Understand your budget! There are many items that can add up, including whether you’re hiring it out or doing it yourself, the types and amount of materials you’ll need, if you’re adding landscaping, etc. Put together your budget first.

Install your pool first! If you already have a pool, skip this consideration, but if you don’t, make sure you’re not doing things out of order. Never build a deck and then plan to install a pool. It’s not a chance worth taking as measurements only need to be slightly off to have to start all over again and not fit.

You’ll need fencing. While we mentioned considering adding a fence to your pool directly or on the deck, it’s a requirement by state. You may have a fenced in backyard that’s already within code, but if you don’t, make sure to find out what the requirement is and plan for it. You’ll also want to check your city’s codes for how close you can build decking to fences and other existing structures. Knowing all the requirements ahead of time will save you time and money.

Build as close to the pool as you can. Do your best to align the decking boards with the lip of the pool to avoid trips and stubbed toes. This not only adds safety, but also has a really nice aesthetic to your deck design.

Account for repairs. This is on all fronts, but mostly something to consider with the pool. If you install your pool correctly and maintain it well, it shouldn’t be a problem, but tears and new pool liners may be in the future. Build to make sure you can easily make these types of updates without having to tear up your deck!
