To help you get a jumpstart on your sectional shopping, we’ve gathered the most popular questions:

  • What is the difference between a couch, a sofa and a sectional sofa?
  • How big is a 3-piece sectional?
  • How do you keep the sectional sofa pieces together?

Couch vs. sofa. vs. sectional

First, let’s break down the difference between the most common living room furniture terms.

The words couch and sofa are often used interchangeably to describe the same piece of furniture: bench-style seating with cushions, with anywhere from 2 to 5 seats or more.

Couch tends to be used more casually, while sofa has a more formal connotation. The furniture industry almost exclusively uses the word “sofa,” but both are perfectly acceptable.

Meanwhile, a sectional sofa is composed of two or more sections for sitting.

Some sectionals are modular and slide apart simply, so you can easily rearrange or accommodate the addition or removal of sections.

The most common is the L-shaped sectional, with seating that wraps around or a chaise lounge to kick your feet up.

How big is a 3-piece sectional sofa?

There is no standard size for a 3-piece sectional sofa. It will depend on several factors, most importantly the number of seats you want.

In general, though, sectionals are available anywhere from roughly 7 feet to 13 feet wide.

If your store can customize your sectional, like you can at participating Watson’s locations, then you can add or remove seats to adjust the width to fit your lifestyle and your space.

How do you keep the sectional sofa pieces together?

Some sectionals simply lock into place with a bracket that is built-in to the side of each sectional piece. Other sectionals are screwed together.

Either way, if properly installed, you don’t have to worry about the sections coming apart during daily wear.
