5 Tips for Arranging Your Patio Furniture

Arranging your patio furniture is no different than arranging your indoor furniture. Regardless of whether you only have a few smaller pieces or a large space with many outdoor furniture pieces, arranging it correctly can make a big difference.

To make it easy to set up your patio (or re-arrange it from its current set-up), we’ve put together some tips to follow to make sure you have a comfortable and convenient arrangement for all your purposes and all of your furniture.

Tips for Arranging Patio Furniture

Follow these tips if you’re stuck on how to arrange or feel like your current arrangement isn’t working.

#1: Find Your Focal Point

Any room, whether indoor or outdoor, needs to have a focal point. For an outdoor space, this can be a piece of furniture, a specific feature, like an outdoor fire pit or water feature, or even your outdoor dining area.

Having a focal point is what will help draw people in and know where to go. It’s also the point at which you’ll build and arrange all your other pieces.

#2: Understand Your Foot Traffic

Make sure you walk through and understand the traffic patterns you’re creating when you’re placing furniture. Too much furniture in one area and not enough walking space can create congestion quickly. Take into account where people will likely “enter” and “exit” your space. If it’s not what you want, move the furniture accordingly to create the traffic flow you want with enough space to get through.

When placing patio furniture like outdoor sectionals or sofas, make sure you have ample room around all sides, including in front, so that people don’t have to squeeze by others to get in or out of the middle seats.

#3: Separate Your Spaces

If you have a larger space, it’s best to divide each purpose into its own space. For instance, if you enjoy outdoor grilling and cooking, create a separate space for an outdoor kitchen. If you also plan to eat outdoors, create another space for your outdoor dining area. Seating should be separate from your cooking to account for smoke, smells, and safety.

In addition, if you have a large space, you want to break up all the possible outdoor furniture. For instance, a chat set or chaise lounge chairs with a large umbrella could be set up over an outdoor rug in one area while a sectional and fire pit could be in another. This way you are creating more areas and using your space better.

#4: Don’t Forget the Accessories

Accessories can add a lot to your outdoor space, especially if you’re looking to fill some open spaces and add more convenience. Ottomans are a versatile piece that can be used as extra seating, a footrest, or even an accent table. They are also easy to move around, making them convenient to move when you need them.

Outdoor rugs pull together your patio furniture and warm up your space with color and texture. Consider adding one under an outdoor dining area, by your sectional or sofa, or even in front of a hot tub entrance.

Accent tables are also a versatile piece for holding food and drinks, a good book, your s’mores ingredients, or towels if you have a hot tub or pool! Consider your furniture and their uses and place accent tables accordingly for convenience.

#5: Create Seamless Transitions

Because you are in an outdoor space, consider adding flowers and plants around to create a seamless transition from patio space to the rest of your outdoor space and gardens. Hanging plants, vases, and flowers add color and can fill in large, open spaces. An herb garden is another great idea that is multipurpose and adds color to your outdoor kitchen area.
