We usually associate grilling with summertime, but there’s no reason to miss out on the delicacies of BBQ, grilled vegetables, and more during the wintertime.

While we may opt to grill more during the summer because of the warmer temperatures, grilling can be done anytime of year with the right set-up, grill, and proper care.

Whether you prefer long, slow-cooked smoking or want the quick char on some hot dogs and hamburgers, Watson’s carries all the grills and accessories you need to enjoy your favorite foods all year round.

Tips for Wintertime Grilling

  1. Plan ahead. If you’re in colder weather areas, make sure to plan ahead to give your grill time to warm up as it will take longer in colder temperatures. Plan for an extra 15-20 minutes from your usual time to warm up in colder temps.
  2. Keep the lid on. Every time you open the lid, you’ll lose heat quickly, so only open when necessary to check your food. When it’s ready to be taken off, transfer to a warm pan or tin to keep it from losing heat.
  3. Watch the wind. Find a spot that is sheltered from the wind and make sure it’s away from any structures or landscaping that could be flammable.
  4. Clear away snow. If you have snow on the ground, clear it away before lighting or turning on your grill. If you don’t, the snow will melt and eventually freeze causing a slipping hazard.
  5. Safety first. Make sure before grilling to check your grill, clean it, make sure lines are good and that there isn’t any damage to tanks or other elements.
  6. Dress appropriately. This may seem obvious and while you’re not necessarily going to be standing outside for long, it’s still important to dress for the weather as you get it started, check food, and clean and cover it up when it’s cooled down.
  7. Cover your grill. Always remember after cool down to cover your grill to keep the elements out. Freezing rain can quickly cause buildup and can mean a frozen lid or other frozen internal elements.
  8. More fuel. Because it takes longer to warm up and the fuel sources aren’t as efficient in colder temperatures, you’re likely to need more fuel to get your food cooked, so plan ahead to have more charcoal, pellets, or an extra propane tank nearby.

Add more fun and warmth to your winter meal plans by including your grill and get the most out of it all year round.
